Renewable energy is at the centre of the transition to a less carbon-intensive and more sustainable energy system. Renewables have grown rapidly in recent years, accompanied by sharp cost reductions for solar photovoltaics and wind power in particular. The IEA expects renewable electricity generation to increase by a more than one-third by 2022. However, renewable heat and transport are lagging behind, despite good potential.
