The global exchange for energy efficiency policies, data and analysis

Appliances (excluding heating, cooking and cooling appliances) are responsible for around 17% of final electricity use by buildings.


By 2040, appliances could be twice as efficient as compared to today


Energy intensity improvements by appliances (refrigeration, cleaning, TVs and computers, other) since 2000 have avoided around 500 PJ, keeping total energy consumption by appliances relatively stable, despite a substantial increasing in ownership and use.

The Efficient World Scenario shows that by implementing cost-effective energy efficiency opportunities available today, appliances could be twice as efficient (service per unit of energy) in 2040, compared to current levels.

Under the EWS, globally, there is the potential to reduce future consumption by 2 500 PJ per annum by 2040, using cost-effective technologies available today. The introduction of minimum energy performance standards and mandatory comparative labelling will be key to driving up the efficiency of appliances sold. As part of the IEA Efficient World Strategy, the performance requirements of these policies would be increased as the efficiency of the average new products improve over time.
