Green the Capitol Initiative was created by Speaker Pelosi to demonstrate an example of environmentally responsible and healthy working environment for employees. The House adopted three goals for future operations: 1. Operate the House in a carbon-neutral manner by the end of the 110th Congress 2. Reduce the carbon footprint of the House by cutting energy consumption by 50% in 10 years (ending in 2017) 3. Make House operations a model of sustainability. Since its inception Green the Capitol has resulted in the diversion of more than 75,000 pounds of waste from landfills and the cutting of more than 400,000 pounds of carbon emissions and more than 175,000 kWh of electricity.
