Description:Starting in 2007, the Carbon Trust and Defra commissioned the British Standards Institution (BSI) to develop a Publicly Available Specification (PSA) to measure embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in goods and services. The resulting PSA 2050 can be used for a variety of formal and informal processes for improving and communicating the GHG performance of products and services. PSA 2050 is to be used by organisations that supply goods and services, as well as consumers. The specification allows for internal assessment of life-cycle GHG emissions, allows for comparison of goods and services, a common basis for reporting and communication, as well as a benchmark for GHG emissions reductions programmes. In addition, it facilitates the evaluation of alternative product configurations, sourcing and manufacturing methods, material choices and supplier selection on the basis of life-cycle GHG emissions. The PSA 2050 is accompanied by a guide on how to implement the specification, sharing best practice, tools and frameworks for calculating product-level GHG emissions, in accordance with the method specified in the PAS 2050.
