In July 2000 the UK government published a 10-Year Plan for Transport, a long-term strategy for increased investment to deliver a quicker, safer, more reliable and environmentally friendly system. The 10-Year plan envisaged total spending (including private investment) of GBP 181 billion over 10 years. A report on progress towards delivery of the 10-Year Plan for Transport was published in December 2002. This set out what was achieved in the first 18 months from April 2001 when the plan came into effect. Following a review of the 10-Year Plan, a new strategy looking out to 2014 and beyond was developed in 2007 (see separate entry). This is not a statement of current government policy.
