Description:The Green Fuels Challenge was unveiled by the Chancellor in the pre-budget report in November 2000. The programme aims to stimulate industry to develop practical proposals for alternative fuels. Following a consultation with industry led by the Department of the Environment (DETR), Budget 2001 announced reductions in duty on biodiesel and further reductions in duty on road fuel gases. The Budget also announced duty reductions or exemptions for pilot studies for vehicles running on longer-term fuels, in particular fuels for use in fuel cells, such as hydrogen and methanol.
