Document outlines objectives for years 2013, 2020 and 2030. It focuses on adjusting and improving Romanian economy and energy sector to the EU standards.

Main objective outlined by the policy for 2013 Horizon is to assure increase of energy safety of the country by establishing legal and administrative framework supporting development of the energy sector in modern market economy, under rules of competitiveness and safety. By 2013 Romania plans to reduce by 8% its greenhouse gases emissions which will lead to fulfilment of its international obligations outlined by the Kyoto Protocol and will assist Romania in preservation of natural environment.

These objectives will be reached by:

  • -  an increasing share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources in an annual electricity production of Romania;
  • -  by promotion of rational and efficient usage of energy;
  • -  supporting research and development initiatives in domain of renewable energies and energy efficiency;
  • -  Reducing negative impact of Romanian energy sector for an environment.

By 2020 national objective of Romania is to guarantee efficient operation under safety conditions of the national energy system. Also, the goal is to match Romanian energy intensity and efficiency levels with EU levels. It is planned to meet obligations set by EU in its legislative package “Climate changes – renewable energies”. Increase Romania’s involvement in fight with climate change and RE promotion by adopting relevant international agreements. In order to reach these objectives Romanian authorities will take numerous administrative and legal actions.

By 2030 Romania plans to align to EU medium performances on energy indicators and climate change. This will be accompanied by fulfilment of previously set targets for decreased emissions of greenhouse gases.
