A specialized fund, the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund (GRIF) was created in 2010 following a 2009 Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Guyana and Norway as a means to channel international financing for avoided deforestation. The World Bank acts as the GRIF trustee, and as of 2014 it had received USD 150 million in payments from Norway. The fund has been used to deploy renewable energy projects.
