Description:The Provincial Government of British Columbia announced a tax relief to promote green energy by proposing further tax relief for independent run-of-river power producers. Run-of-river projects use the natural flow of a river and gravity rather than large dams to power their turbines. The Government of British Columbia is proposing to provide partial property tax exemption for the penstock system (the pipe stystem that carries water from river to turbine) for run-of river hydro projects. A run-of-river project, the 50 megawatt Rutherford Creek Power Project near Pemberton, began producing electricity in May 2004. The project took less than two years to build and was developed under a negotiated Participation Agreement with First Nations.
