Description:The Natural Gas Transformation measure focused on reducing up-front cost of targeted natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in urban fleet applications, increasing the demand for these vehicles and improving economies for vehicle manufacturers. The measure included the following components: vehicle grants, the establishment of revolving funds and promotion and awareness activities. This measure was designed to help to increase demand for these lower-emitting vehicles, and encourage manufacturers to increase production of these vehicles. Under the first component, federal financial incentives were offered for NGVs in targeted urban areas to governmental and commercial fleets in conjunction with financial support from stakeholders. Regarding the second component, the Government of Canada provided financial support to the NGV industrys plans to introduce additional financial assistance, through a revolving fund, to underwrite upfront costs in certain vehicle market segments. The governments participation was expected to increase the leverage and impact of the federal grants. The third component, promotion and awareness, centred on securing partnerships with manufacturers and municipal and provincial governments.
