The Marketing of Efficient Vehicles Initiative (or Auto$mart program), a complement to the Motor Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Program, encourages and assists motorists to buy, drive and maintain their vehicles in energy-efficient ways. It includes: - a labelling program and an awareness and information campaign (including the Auto$mart Guide and the annual Fuel Consumption Guide) to encourage purchases of more efficient vehicles. A label similar to the Energy Star label, currently used on consumer appliances, will be introduced to provide a new vehicle ranking and a highly visible endorsement high-efficiency vehicles. Since 1999, vehicle manufacturers have been attaching an EnerGuide for Vehicles fuel consumption label to their cars, vans and light duty trucks. - an awareness and information campaign to encourage reduced fuel use through improved vehicle maintenance and modified driving practices. The campaign includes the Auto$mart Guide, resource materials to driver educators for fuel-efficiency training to novice drivers, and Web-based communications tools that support and encourage the development of new initiatives of local governments, industry and associations to promote fuel efficiency.
