The Program of Energy Research and Development (PERD) is a programme that conducts R&D in all areas of energy except nuclear fission. The majority of federal funding for technology initiatives for renewables originates from PERD.

PERD provides funds directly to 12 federal partner departments and agencies. Energy projects funded by PERD fall within programmes under one of the following strategic directions, including those targeting renewable enrgy:

  • - Distributed Power Generation
  • - wind, solar, biomass combustion, hydro, marine;
  • - Bio-based Energy Systems
  • - agricultural, forestry and municipal wastes to energy and industrial energy related products;

The Office of Energy Research and Development is responsible for managing PERD, including international cooperation in energy R&D.
