Policy status:In Force
Date Effective:1999
Policy Type:Research, Development and Deployment (RD&D)
Policy Target:Energy Sector
Agency:Natural Resources Canada
Description:Scientists with Natural Resources Canadas Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) are leading a collaborative international scientific research program to assess the potential of Canada’s natural gas hydrate occurrences as an energy source, as well as to develop and test new exploration and production techniques. Gas hydrates incorporate natural gas into a solid ice-like structure under conditions of low temperature and high pressure, such as those found in deep permafrost and offshore sediments. Relative to the combustion of coal and oil, the combustion of natural gas offers a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil sources.
