Since October 2006, residents of the Brussels Capital Region have the option of giving up their old vehicles in exchange for incentives offered by the Regional government in the form of a one- or two-year subscription to a car share programme Cambio, along with either a one- or two-year pass for the public transportation system, or a subsidy of up to EUR 505 for the purchase of a bicycle and biking equipment. Should the owner of a vehicle first registered prior to January 1997 give it up and have it destroyed, additional benefits are awarded: up to two years of transit and car sharing subscription; up to two years of car share, one year of transit and a bicycle bonus; up to two years of car share, and two bicycle bonuses. The person receiving the incentives cannot register a new vehicle during the period they are benefitting from the scheme.
