The Australian Government announced its intention to consider a national cap-and-trade emissions trading scheme during 2008, with a view to finalising the details of the scheme in 2010 and implementing the scheme by mid 2011, subject to the passage of legislation. In April 2010 it was announced that the scheme would be deferred until after the end of the current Kyoto commitment period. Following the August 2010 election, the Australian Government established a multi-party climate change committee to examine carbon pricing mechanisms.
