Description:A feasibility study on the introduction of a national emissions trading system to help Australia meet its Kyoto emissions target has resulted in the release of four discussion papers and two consultancy reports on issues such as coverage, permit allocation, and treatment of sinks. The Commonwealth Government has yet to make a decision on the development and implementation of an emissions trading system for Australia. The Government is engaged in consultations with business and other stakeholders to develop a forward strategy to meet its long term greenhouse objectives. This set of discussions with outcomes scheduled for mid-2003, may have a bearing on a possible future decision relating to emissions trading.
