Long-term industry agreements on energy efficiency (LTA3 / MEE)

Long-term Energy Efficeincy Agreements aim to improve the energy efficiency of industry. According to the Government, more than 1000 companies from 37 sectors have established agreements to reduce their energy use.

 

Within this framework companies have the opportunity to enter into supplementary agreements with the government concerning energy efficient measures with a payback period of over five years. The government looks at the actions it can perform for each one-on-one agreement in order to clear any obstacles so that the measure can be undertaken.

 

An addendum to the law (Addendum MEE) provides for individuall MEE companies  to achieve 9 PJ in additional final energy savings. This is done within the framework of the Energy Agreement for Sustainable Growth (6 September 2013). The Addendum MEE runs from 20 April 2017 to 31 December 2020.

 

In addition to energy efficiency measures, renewable energy is considered as an energy-saving measure and companies can meet the terms of their agreement by purchasing renewable energy. In 2018, about 60 TJ of renewable electricity was purchased.

 

Company-specific agreements:

 

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) established specific agreements with a number of companies for energy efficiency measures that go beyond the agreements in the MEE covenant. Eligible measures include utilizing residual heat, projects where equipment is replaced by state-of-the-art energy-efficient equipment or innovative projects where a new energy-saving technology is demonstrated. These gains must be additional to those specified in the long-term agreements.

 

Companies that have taken on these additional agreements include:

 

• Shell Nederland Refinery BV Warmtebedrijf Infra NV and Havenbedrijf Rotterdam NV
• Dow BV and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate
• Het Groene Net, USG and the Province of Limburg
