The National Biogas Programme is one of many projects targeting renewable energy development initiated by the Senegalese government, in a move to reduce poverty and reach Millennium Development Goal targets. This programme also contributes towards energy mix diversification as Senegal is facing increasing energy demand and relies heavily on oil imports. The National Biogas Program is divided in several phases. The first, running from 2009 to 2013, seeks to install 8, 000 biodigestors in three regions of the Peanut basin, namely Fatick, Kaolack and Kaffrine. The installation of biodigestors will benefit from external funding, from the Agence Française de Développement for instance, and from government support through: - A direct grant of CFA 240 million to support their investment. - A subsidy covering 25% of total initial investment cost when the system is installed These biodigestors will provide rural and urban households with sustainable energy for cooking and lighting. They will also improve agricultural productivity since biogas waste can be used as highly-fertile organic manure. .
