Emission compensation obligation for importers of fossil motor fuels

Last updated: 4 July 2019
Until 2012, the Climate Cent served to buy carbon credits (CDM etc) from abroad to fulfill the Swiss Kyoto targets. From 2013, the voluntary Climate Cent will be replaced by a legal obligation on oil importers to offset directly a part of the CO2 emissions from transport fuel use. The offset will be financed by a levy that shall not exceed CHF 0.05 per litre of fuel. The government will define the share of transport emissions to be offset (between 5 and 40%) and to which extent offsetting can be performed domestically and abroad.
