MEPS: Air Conditioners 2011

The energy conservation (energy labelling and minimum performance standards for registrable goods) regulation 2013, prescribes minimum energy efficiency standards for:

  • air-conditioners;
  • clothes dryers;
  • refrigerators.

Minimum energy efficiency stardards:

  •  Casement or window type air-conditioner: COP ≥ 2.90
  • Split type (non-inverter) air-conditioner with one indoor unit (cooling capacity less than 10kW): COP ≥ 3.34
  • Split type (non-inverter) air-conditioner with one indoor unit (cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW): COP ≥ 2.78
  • Split type (non-inverter) air-conditioner with more than one indoor unit (cooling capacity less than 10kW): COP ≥ 3.34
  • Split type (non-inverter) air-conditioner with more than one indoor unit (cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW): COP ≥ 2.64
  • Split type (inverter) air-conditioner with one indoor unit (cooling capacity less than 10kW): COP ≥ 3.06 and Weighted COP ≥ 3.34
  • Split type (inverter) air-conditioner with one indoor unit (cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW): Weighted COP ≥ 2.78
  • Split type (inverter) air-conditioner with more than one indoor unit (cooling capacity less than 10kW): COP ≥ 3.06 and weighted COP ≥ 3.34
  • Split type (inverter) air-conditioner with more than one indoor unit (cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW): Weighted COP ≥ 2.64

The number of ticks and energy efficiency rating to be shown on the Energy Label for air-conditioners shall be determined as follows:

For casement and window type air-conditioners:

  • 2 ticks (energy efficiency rating good) 2.90 ≤ COP < 3.20
  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)COP ≥ 3.20

For split type (non-inverter) air-conditioners with one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity less than 10kW:

  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)COP ≥ 3.34

For split type (non-inverter) air-conditioners with one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW:

  • 2 ticks (energy efficiency rating good) 2.78 ≤ COP < 3.20
  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)COP ≥ 3.20

For split type (non-inverter) air-conditioners with more than one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity less than 10kW:

  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)COP ≥ 3.34

For split type (non-inverter) air-conditioners with more than one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW:

  • 1 tick (energy efficiency rating fair)2.64 ≤ COP < 2.92
  • 2 ticks (energy efficiency rating good) 2.92 ≤ COP < 3.34
  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)COP ≥ 3.34

for split type (inverter) air-conditioners with one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity less than 10kW:

  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)Weighted COP ≥ 3.34 and COP ≥ 3.06
  • 4 ticks (energy efficiency rating excellent) Weighted COP ≥ 3.76 and COP ≥ 3.34

For split type (inverter) air-conditioners with one indoor unit, with a cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW:

  • 1 tick (energy efficiency rating fair)2.78 ≤ Weighted COP < 2.92
  • 2 ticks (energy efficiency rating good) 2.92 ≤ Weighted COP < 3.34
  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)Weighted COP ≥ 3.34 and COP ≥ 3.06
  • 4 ticks (energy efficiency rating excellent)Weighted COP ≥ 3.76 and COP ≥ 3.34

For split type (inverter) air-conditioners with more than one indoor unit with a cooling capacity less than 10kW:

  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)Weighted COP ≥ 3.34 and COP ≥ 3.06
  • 4 ticks (energy efficiency rating excellent)Weighted COP ≥ 3.76 and COP ≥ 3.34

For split type (inverter) air-conditioners with more than one indoor unit with a cooling capacity equal to or more than 10kW:

  • 1 tick (energy efficiency rating fair)2.64 ≤ Weighted COP < 2.92
  • 2 ticks (energy efficiency rating good)2.92 ≤ Weighted COP < 3.34
  • 3 ticks (energy efficiency rating very good)Weighted COP ≥ 3.34 and COP ≥ 3.06
  • 4 ticks (energy efficiency rating excellent)Weighted COP ≥ 3.76 and COP ≥ 3.34

“Coefficient of Performance” or “COP” means the ratio of the total cooling capacity expressed in Watts to the total effective input power expressed in Watts, as specified in the test report

“Weighted COP” means the sum of 0.4 × COP at full-load cooling capacity and 0.6 × COP at part-load cooling capacity

The testing standards are also established:

  • Casement/Window type air conditioners: ISO 5151 (2010)
  • Split type (inverter) air conditioners with more than one indoor unit: ISO 15042 (2011)
  • Split type (inverter) air conditioners with one indoor unit: ISO 5151 (2010)
  • Split type (non-inverter) air conditioners with more than one indoor unit: ISO 15042 (2011)
  • Split type (non-inverter) air conditioners with one indoor unit: ISO 5151 (2010)

This standard was revoked by G.N. No. S 747/2017 with effect from 01/01/2018.
