Last updated: 5 November 2017
Established within the framework of the 2nd Community Support Framework, the Operational Programme for Energy (OPE) provided capital cost grants for the promotion of renewable energy and energy conservation. Up to 1999, 125 renewable energy projects were approved (130 MW wind, 72 MW small-hydro, 46 MWh biomass district heating, 42 MW CHP with biomass, 5 MWh other biomass projects, 42 solar central active systems, 8 projects for PV systems and 5 projects for passive solar systems). In addition, approximately 300 projects for energy conservation and substitution of fossil fuels and electricity by natural gas in the industrial and tertiary sectors were approved. In completing OPE, the Greek government expected to conserve 4.3% and 2.2% in the industrial and tertiary sectors, respectively.
