Bilateral Partnerships to Promote Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

Austria's bilateral partnership programme sponsors cooperation between Austrian firms and firms in Bulgaria and Romania engaged in energy production, building renovation and energy efficiency. The energy partnerships encourage the use of biomass, solar energy, small hydropower, and CHP. The partnerships also promote energy conservation through building renovation. As noted by the Austrian Energy Agency, the partnerships aim: to identify suitable companies and projects to inform Bulgarian/Romanian companies about Austrian companies, products and initiatives to carry out feasibility studies for various projects to arrange for seminars in Austria for partnership members together with Austrian producers to present Austrian initiatives in Bulgaria & Romania to identify suitable investors to facilitate contracting 2004 -2006 programmes sponsored by the energy partnerships in Bulgaria have been valued at 15 million euros. Since 2001, the Austrian Development Agency has spent 35 million euros on climate-related projects in Central and Eastern Europe: Albania/Macedonia: 17 M€ Bosnia and Herzegovina: 11 M€ Romania/Bulgaria/Moldova: 4 M€ Serbia and Montenegro: 3 M€ Between 2001 and 2003: 12.8% of project funds used for projects of energy generation and distribution.
