The ACT have conducted reverse auctions since 2012 to build new renewable generation. Under the ACT reverse auctions, the contracted generation can be anywhere in the NEM provided the projects demonstrate exceptional economic development benefits to ACT renewable energy industries. This flexibility broadens competition and brings down costs. The renewable energy auctions have enabled the ACT to meet its 100% renewable energy by 2020 target. On 15 November 2019, the ACT opened another auction to safeguard the delivery of 100% renewable electricity for the ACT beyond 2020.
