Offshore Wind Outlook
Copenhagen, Denmark: 25 October 2019Register here
IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol and Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen will launch the special report on offshore wind in Copenhagen, 25 October 2019.
The report which is part of the forthcoming World Energy Outlook 2019 will be published as a standalone report. The first of its kind, it will include new analysis on global technical potentials, outlook for competitiveness by regions and the role of offshore wind in meeting global climate goals and electricity transitions. Europe is given special emphasis, as the leader in the technology and prospects for continued dynamic offshore wind sector growth.
Minister Dan Jørgensen will discuss the perspectives for offshore wind energy in the North Sea. Global market leaders Ørsted, Vattenfall, MHI Vestas and Siemens will also highlight commercial, technical as well as climate options and ambitions for global offshore energy production towards 2050 and beyond.
The IEA’s special report on offshore wind is extremely well timed. The European Commission has designated offshore wind as a key component of long-term strategy for reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, with scenarios pointing to deployment of up to 450 GW of offshore power. In 2019, Denmark opened its newest offshore wind park in the North Sea with a capacity of 407 MW – comprised 49 giant 8 MW turbines and supplying energy for 425,000 Danish households.
