International Workshop on Countermeasures to Urban Heat Islands |
|
| Location and date(s) of workshop: |
Tokyo: 14 August 2006 |
| Organiser(s): | IEA with the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport |
Background: |
Most electricity networks worldwide are now summer peaking in response to rapidly rising air conditioning loads. The urban heat island phenomenon, which has been observed and measured for over a century, is a major contributory factor to this growth in AC loads. This workshop, which was co-sponsored by IEA and the Japanese Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT), is the first international event in which experts and policy makers have met to discuss measures to mitigate urban heat islands. The benefits include improved thermal comfort, reduced cooling energy use, lower smog concentrations (and related health benefits), and more. |
