Background:

As a part of the Agency's response to the G8 Plan of Action on climate change, clean energy and sustainable development, the IEA and World Coal Institute will co-host a workshop in New Delhi focusing on the challenges faced by the coal industry in developing countries. Achieving clean development requires industry to make a positive contribution through technology development and deployment, and governments to create the right conditions for commercialisation of relevant technologies. The workshop will allow government officials and industrialists from India, in discussion with CEOs from the international coal industry, national coal association representatives, NGOs and other delegates, to offer their thinking on the best route forward for developing countries and how international cooperation might speed progress towards the desired outcome of a sustainable energy future.
