From June 1 to 4, 2004, Germany hosted the International Conference for Renewable Energies, as announced at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September 2002 in Johannesburg. The conference was expected to generate further impetus for the global development of renewable energy. The conference addressed the following main themes:

* Financing instruments and market development
* Formation of enabling political framework conditions
* Capacity building (education, research, networks, cooperation, etc.)

The IEA organised a side event during the conference to highlight IEA activities in renewables. The IEA/REU launched a new database on renewable energy policies and measures in the JREC countries. The IEA hosted an exhibition at the conference venue, with participation of the IEA Renewable Energy Implementing Agreements.

Biofuels for Transport: An International Perspective
This new IEA publication reviews recent trends and activities in transport biofuels and prospects for the future around the world. Among other things, the study finds strong potential from emerging technologies such as cellulose-to-ethanol and biomass-to-liquids via gasification. It also identifies important opportunities for trade of low cost biofuels production that exists already in countries like Brazil and India.
Teresa Malyshev, Expert, IEA

The Activities of the IEA Renewable Energy Working Party
