IEA/CSLF Joint Workshop on Legal Aspects of Storing Carbon Dioxide |
|
| Location and date(s) of workshop: |
IEA, Paris: 12-13 July 2004 |
| Organiser(s): | IEA Working Party on Fossil Fuels / Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum |
Background: |
Much of the work to date on carbon capture and storage (CCS) has focussed on technical issues. The purpose of this joint workshop is to look at legal issues surrounding CCS in both domestic and international law. This workshop aims to address these issues by sharing countries’ experience of legal aspects of CCS, and seeking a way forward to resolve these uncertainties. The workshop will comprise two parts: national law and international law. The first day of the workshop will look at national laws, and will comprise a review of current national laws relating to CCS, followed by a panel discussion looking at how national laws can resolve specific problems of a CCS regime. The second day will then focus on international law and include presentations from relevant international conventions, then a panel discussion on the prospects and next steps for changing international law to ensure legal clarity and certainty for CCS. |
