Background: |
The workshop was organised by the Energy Efficiency Working party and the End Use Working Party of the IEA, the workshop was intended to explore the linkages between basic and applied science and energy technology development, and the deployment of such new technologies in the market place. Expert panellists were invited, and highlighted the need to have active policies to introduce energy efficiency improving technologies. Three case studies were provided: energy efficiency in building technologies, and in industrial processes (“lost foam casting”) and an investigation of the policy instrument of “white certificates” and the impact on R&D. The workshop reviewed how for any new technology, a number of means can be used to communicate the technologies, including demonstration schemes, workshops, meetings, joint R&D, multi-stakeholder events. And that, for encouraging deployment of such technologies, different policy instruments are suitable at different stages: standards, voluntary agreements, grants, procurement policy etc. all can have a role to play at certain stages. The results of the workshop are to be written up and followed up by both Working Parties. |
