DR KELLY THAMBIMUTHU
Senior Scientist
CANMET Energy Technology
Dr Kelly Thambimuthu is a Senior Scientist with the CANMET Energy
Technology Centre (CETC), Natural Resources Canada. At CETC, Kelly
is responsible for R&D on advanced fossil energy utilisation
cycles and is an adviser on carbon management and CO2 capture and
storage technologies. In the international arena, he is the Chairman
of the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme, a leading group within
the International Energy Agency/Organisation of Economic Cooperation
and Development (IEA/OECD) evaluating options to achieve deep reductions
in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil energy use. In other IEA
initiatives he is the Canadian delegate to the IEA Clean Coal Centre
and the IEA Zero Emissions Technologies (ZETS) task force. Dr.
Thambimuthu is a member of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) Working Group III, coordinating lead author team
currently writing a special assessment report on CO2 Capture and
Storage. In addition, he is also a Vice Chair of the Technical
Group of the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF), which
is an international collaborative initiative launched in 2003 by
the USA and 15 other countries to foster the development of carbon
sequestration technologies as a climate change mitigation option.
Dr. Thambimuthu holds degrees at the Batchelor’s, Master’s
and Doctorate levels in chemical engineering from the University
of Birmingham, United Kingdom, McGill University, Canada and University
of Cambridge, United Kingdom. In 2003, Dr Thambimuthu held an appointment
as the TD Canada Trust, Walter Bean Visiting Professor in the Environment
at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
