CURRENT OCCUPATION

Since 23 December 1996 Mr Jones have been employed as Executive Director of the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA), the representative organisation of the upstream oil and gas industry in Australia. APPEA members include all the major oil and gas production and exploration companies and also the major companies providing services to the upstream oil and gas industry.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Prior to joining APPEA Mr Jones was the Executive Director of the Pulp and Paper Manufacturers Federation of Australia (PPMFA) the industry association representing the five major pulp and paper producing companies in Australia.

From 1989 to 1992 Mr Jones was based in Paris as the Australian representative to the International Energy Agency, the Nuclear Energy Agency and the OECD Agriculture Committee. He also represented Australia in international greenhouse negotiations in the lead up to Rio and in negotiations on the European Energy Charter.

Prior to his posting in Paris, Mr Jones was a senior Commonwealth public servant working in a range of departments (predominantly in the resources and energy area but also in regional development and foreign affairs). He worked on a wide range of issues including:;

regional development (including the Commonwealth Growth Centres Program)
energy policy;

crude oil pricing (led the team that worked on deregulation of Australian crude oil pricing in 1986);
petroleum taxation (led the team that drafted the first Australian Petroleum Resource Rent Taxation legislation);

native title (he was part of the team that drafted the first native title act in 1993);
greenhouse;

electricity policy;

environmental issues (including the Gordon below Franklin Dam issue and the North Queensland Rainforest world Heritage Area); and

international agricultural trade (negotiating a free trade agreement with NZ).
