This IEA report offers a comprehensive in-depth assessment of the energy policies of the United Kingdom, including recommendations for policy development. The UK has led the world in energy market liberalisation since the late 1980s. The energy industry has dramatically improved its performance, bringing lower prices to households and industry. Key issues now are enhancing energy efficiency policies, achieving fuel diversity through market mechanisms and ensuring fairness and transparency in competition through industry-specific regulation and general competition policy. Other important issues include the outlook for the coal industry, which is closely linked to competition in electricity generation. It is also important that past environmental achievements be followed up with policies to meet new commitments made by the Government. This report is one of a series of periodic in-depth reviews conducted by the IEA on a four-year cycle. Short reviews of energy developments in all 24 IEA countries (including summaries of the year's in-depth reviews) are published annually in Energy Policies of IEA Countries.
