The Gas Guzzler Tax is a financial penalty levied on domestic and imported cars with fuel economy ratings of less than 22.5 miles per gallon (mpg). The tax ranges from USD1,000 for cars with ratings of at least 21.5 but less than 22.5 mpg, to USD7,700 for cars that get less than 12.5 mpg. This tax does not apply to vehicles weighing more than 6,000 pounds.
