Mobile Air Conditioning Climate Protection Partnership promotes next-generation vehicle air conditioning systems for cost-effective designs and improved service procedures to minimize refrigerant emissions. The partnership has four goals: 1) Promote next-generation mobile air conditioning systems that are better for the environment while satisfying customer safety, cost, and reliability concerns; 2) Develop cost-effective designs and improved service procedures to minimize refrigerant emissions; 3) Communicate technical progress to policymakers and the public; 4) Document current and near-term opportunities to improve the environmental performance of mobile air conditioning system design, operation, and maintenance. Partners are also identifying alternatives for the refrigerant HFC-134a, the predominant refrigerant in todays vehicle air conditioning systems. In 2004, the programme announced the Improved Mobile Air Conditioning project with goals of reducing vehicle AC fuel consumption by at least 30% and refrigerant emissions by 50%. The programmes ombined achievements can reduce vehicle fuel use by 30%, saving 2.1 billion gallons of gas per year and can reduce refrigerant emissions by 50%, and reduce overall GHG emissions by 9 MM t CO2 equivalent.
