Description:In February 2002, President Bush set as a national goal reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of the American economy, measured as emissions per unit of gross domestic product, by 18 percent from 2002 to 2012. Meeting this commitment will prevent more than 500 million metric tons of carbon-equivalent emissions through 2012. The intensity approach promotes near-term opportunities to promote accelerated adoption of existing, improved technologies, energy efficiency, and renewable resources to slow the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.
