Description:

The U.S. Department of Energy's Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO) works with industry, academia, and national laboratory partners to develop and demonstrate transformative technologies to enable commercially viable bioenergy and bioproducts to in turn displace petroleum-derived fuels. In addition to R&D, a major effort of the program includes deployment and further development of infrastructure and opportunities for market penetration of biobased fuels and products.

The Office seeks to help bridge the gap from technology validation to deployment. With industry partnerships BETO has supported the development of six integrated biorefineries at commercial scale, with the capacity to produce approximately 160 million gallons of biofuel by 2020, including 60 million gallons of ethanol and 100 million gallons of hydrocarbon fuel.
