Description:

It is foreseen that the climate change in Turkey will have negative impacts like diminishing water resources, increase in flood, forest fires, drought, desertification and linked to these ecological degradation. Climatic forecasts that have been carried out within the framework of the UN Joint Program on Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change indicated that possible effects of climate change in Turkey i.e. noticeable increase in temperature and changes in the water cycles may negatively impact all economic sectors, including settlements and increase the risk of natural disasters. The most vulnerable to climate change risk are these sectors, which highly depend on access to water resources, like agriculture and some manufacturing branches. Thus, the government of Turkey decided to implement a national strategy, which points out the main directions for adaptation to climate change for Turkey. National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy focuses on five key areas, which have been selected in a result of technical and scientific studies as well as participatory processes. These areas are:

  • water resources management;
  • agricultural sector and food security;
  • ecosystem services;
  • biodiversity and forestry;
  • natural disaster risk management and public health.
