Description:

Energi21, Norway’s national strategy for the energy sector, sets out the desired course for research, development and demonstration of new technology for the 21st century.

The Energi21 initiative was launched with a mandate from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, which has now requested that the strategy be revised. Efforts are currently underway in Energy21 to revamp the original strategy, giving it a more concrete, target-oriented focus.

The vision of Energi21: Norway: Europe’s leading energy and environment-conscious nation – from a national energy balance to green energy exports

The objective of the Energi21 strategy is to:

  • provide a coherent, long-term, industry-driven strategy that extends across the entire range of the energy sector;
  • bring together the various stakeholders to work towards achieving a common goal;
  • promote research in areas relevant to the industry, with the aim of boosting value creation through technological development.

Energi21 unifies energy stakeholders, for the first time, behind a shared vision and a common strategy for research and development for the energy sector. Built on industry priorities, the strategy also stresses the need for closer collaboration between the authorities, trade and industry and other players in the research arena.

At present, six groups, comprising some 120 members, are working on reports and roadmaps in specific Technology Target Areas to provide recommendations for revising the strategy and giving it a more concrete focus. The revision process is expected to be completed in June 2011

Amended:

"The revised Energi21 research strategy further develops the areas in which Norway is in the best position to succeed,” says Sverre Gotaas, Chair of the Energi21 board.

The strategy identifies six priority focus areas:

  • Solar cells
  • Offshore wind power
  • Utilisation of resources using balance power
  • Flexible energy systems – smart grids
  • Conversion of low-temperature heat into electricity
  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
