In 2005, in a bid to increase the use of electric-powered cars, government launched a scheme for a grant of 15.25% on the purchase price of electric cars subject to a maximum grant of €1165 (GN 203 of 2005). The uptake of this scheme was not very successful.
In 2008, in order to further encourage the use of electric-powered cars for personal use, the grant was increased to 20% of the purchase price of the car, subject to a maximum of €2,329 (GN 607 of 2008).
