Description:

The Basic Act on Energy Policy was enacted in June 2002. A lawmaker-initiated legislation, it sought to set out the countrys fundamental and overall energy policy direction after the approval of the Diet. This act sets the principles regarding energy policy, both demand and supply, as: 1. Energy security; 2. Adaptability to the environment; and 3. Utilisation of market mechanisms based on the careful consideration of these points. The act also identifies the role of each stakeholder, such as the central government, local governments, businesses, and individuals. The law directs the government to draft a Basic Energy Plan based on these principles to formulate energy demand related policies in a long-term and comprehensive manner.
