The New National Energy Strategy of May 2006 and the Strategic Energy Plan of March 2007 respectively require that an Energy Efficiency Technology Strategy be formulated. The Energy Efficiency Technology Strategy (first edition) was formulated by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry（METI）in 2007, and revised in line with the amendment of Strategic Energy Plan. In September 2016, the METI and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) jointly issued the amended version of Energy Efficiency Technology Strategy. The strategy aims to effectively advance R&D and popularize the outcomes from R&D as an effort for achieving the goal of “realization of an advanced energy-saving society” set in the Strategic Energy Plan (formulated in 2014). To this end, it specifies the technologies that Japan should emphasize, and describes compiled scenarios and other future visions for introducing such technologies into society. The key areas of revision include the broader concept of energy management systems, such as to utilize EMS (HEMS, BEMS, etc.), Internet of Things and technology of integrated control for optimum usage of energy.
