Description:

Fossil fuels in Japan are taxed at the following rates:

  • Gasoline Tax: JPY 53.8 per L
  • LPG Tax: JPY 17.5 per kg
  • Diesel Tax: JPY 32.1 per L 
  • Aviation Fuel Tax: JPY 26 Yen per L, reduced to JPY 18 per L by 2016 according to amendments made in 2011. The revenue is applied to airport facilities.
  • Electric Power Development Promotion Tax: JPY 0.375 per kWh. Revenue is applied to power source location measures, power source utilization measures, and nuclear safety regulatory measures.
  • Petroleum and Coal Tax*: 
    • Crude Oil, Petroleum Products JPY 2,040/kL
    • LPG and LNG JPY 1,080/t
    • Coal JPY 700/t

*Carbon taxes are incrementally added to these fuels according to the level of CO2 emissions.
