Description:Nine countries (including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States) have agreed to pursue the development of so-called Generation IV nuclear power plants. These countries noted that energy demand will increase significantly in the next 50 years and that nuclear power still holds important advantages in terms of air pollution and energy supply. The next step will be assigning a technical group consisting of government representatives to discuss the technological issues involved and make recommendations about multilateral co-operation.
