As part of the Law for the development and internationalization of companies and energy of July 2009, several specific measures affecting Italy's national energy efficiency strategy were passed. The legislation affects the electricity sector as a whole. Article 30, measures for efficiency in the electricity sector, ensures high efficiency cogeneration installed after February 2007 benefits from the support scheme established at that time for at least 10 years. A similar system of support based on primary energy savings is to be developed, including for energy produced and consumed onsite. It also extends provisions of the CHP law of 2007 for another year. In particular, in order to expedite and guarantee the accomplishment of energy efficiency and energy saving programmes, the Ministry of Economic Development, in collaboration with the National Energy Efficiency Agency, will draw up an "Extraordinary plan for energy efficiency and energy saving".
