In 2006, the Irish government published a Green Paper on Sustainable Energy, which outlines the countrys its aim "to become a world leader in sustainable energy by 2020." The paper set out a series of actions to develop clean coal technology, biomass energy, renewable electricity and energy efficiency. This included a proposed plan to boost energy efficiency by a total of 20% by 2020, in line with the objective set out by the European Commission. After a series of public consultations, a "White Paper" setting out Irelands energy policy to 2020 was released in March 2007 (see separate database entry).
