During 2001, the Hungarian Energy Centre, in co-ordination with a number of ministries, prepared a renewable energy strategy. Part of this work was in the new PHARE programme, which contains the following main themes: - Preparation of the harmonisation of law for the EU directive on biofuels, and assessing the impact of its introduction. - Preparation and impact assessment of the harmonisation of law for the proposed directive on the support of the electricity production from renewables. - Survey of the EU financial support systems for renewable energy resources, including support to agriculture and rural development, and the possibility of structural support; Defining the tasks in reorganising the Hungarian support system in order to develop possible cofinancing. - Further development of the statistical system for renewable energy resources. The implementation of the programme began in January 2002. In 2007 the Energy Centre (EC) prepared the Hungarian Energy Efficiency Action Plan for the EU. The EC is responsible for the techno-economic evaluation and grant distribution of EU Structural Funds Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Operative Program (2004-06) as well as Environmental Protection and Energy Operative Program (2006-13) as Implementing Agency. The EC operates the national energy statistical system for the Central Statistical Office and is responsible for the data reporting to IEA, EU, UNECE, WEC etc. The EC represents Hungary in many EU and other international projects (eg Odyssee).
