Description:

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds a research and development programme on technologies and strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change: the Klimazwei - Research for Climate Protection and Protection from Climate Impacts.

The Programme runs until 2009, currently funding 39 projects targeting both adaptation and mitigation. Energy-related mitigation projects comprise the following:

  • Wind Propulsion for Cargo Ships Project: Studies how the use of wind power in shipping could impact on fuel use and CO2 emissions.
  • BIOCLEAN Project: Examines the engine emissions for different fuel types (heavy fuel oil, bio fuel, fuels from renewable resources) regarding CO2, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen dioxide, sulphuric acid and particulates.
  • Docking Prinzip Project: A consortium developing a new electrical propulsion concept for public transport vehicles. Includes technical, economical and ecological impact studies.
  • StaMoLo Project: Development of strategies to reduce emissions in the courrier, express delivery and parcel service sector. Stationary and mobile logistics processes considered and abatement measures implemented.
  • Chemical Production CO2 Reduction Project: A grouping of 11 industry and research partners look at developing oxygen depolarised cathode technology (ODC) for reducing the CO2 emissions from the production of basic chemicals (notably Chlorine).
  • Strip Casting Project: Further development of process route strip casting in the steel industry, resulting in energy and CO2 emissions savings.
  • CO2 reduction in semi-conductor and solar industry Project: This project looks at ways to improve efficiency in the semi-conductor industry, and develop exhaust gas treatment technology to reduce perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions.
  • Gas Foil Combination for Horticulture Project: Looks at various foil and coating options for glass in greenhouses, to reduce heat consumption.
  • Biogas Feed-in Project: Studies and identifies the barriers and problems associated with feeding biogas into existing gas distribution networks, in order to find solutions to these barriers. A database of regional biogas feed-in potentials is being developed.
  • Smouldering Waste Dumps Project: Examines the heat recovery potential of smouldering waste dumps resulting from coal mining, as well as developing technical procedures for heat recovery.
  • MiMethox Project: Looks at ways of reducing emissions from landfills that cannot be used for energy production (lean gases). The project seeks to develop ways of optimising microbial methane oxidisation biofilters or landfill top covers, and developing a method to quantify their performance.
  • Methakat Project: Examines economically viable disposal of landfill and coal mine lean gases with a methane content under 25 %. The aim of the project is the development of a long-term stable catalyst insert including process and plant technology.
  • Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Leakage and Energy Control Project: This project seeks to expand an existing software product used to monitor greenhouse gas leakage and energy use in refrigeration and air-conditioning. This will be expanded into an entire family of products comprising an operator version, an EU version and a monitoring version.
  • EINBLIK Project: Development of a practically applicable information system to allow for climate-relevant impacts of a companys entire value-added chain, upstream and downstream, to be accounted for.
  • Corporate Management Project: Development of software model that takes into consideration the financial risk of a missing CO2 strategy in corporate decisions, and weighs it against the value of an investment in CO2-mitigation technologies.
  • KliDiff Project: Examines ways of increasing energy efficiency in SMEs, and providing this information to relevant project stakeholders. GEKKO Project: To develop and implement a communication strategy aimed at promoting sustainable construction and refurbishment.
