Description:In addition to one-time vehicle registration fees, buyers of new cars that each kilometer emit more than 199 grams of carbon dioxide will pay an incremental pollution tax. Highly-emitting vehicles that date from July 2004 or after will also be assessed the pollution tax upon their resale. Between 200 and 250 grams emmitted per kilometer, each additional gram of CO2 emissions carries a €2 tax. Above 250 grams, each addition gram carries a 4€ tax. As such, the average annual pollution tax for the 6% of all vehicles emitting between 200 and 250 grams of CO2/km will be €40. Those vehicles emitting more than 250 gms/km will incur average taxes of €211. Targetting passenger vans, sports utility vehicles, high-speed sports cars, and luxury vehicles, the tax should affect about 8% of the two million cars registered each year in France. Expected annual tax revenues of €18 million will be used for anti-pollution activity by ADEME.
