The fuel-economy labelling of new passenger cars sold in Finland came into force at the beginning of 2001, in accordance with the EU directive. Fuel efficiency in cars has been emphasised through a yearly competition to designate the most ecological car of the year in co-operation with the most widely read motoring magazine in Finland.
