Description:As proposed by the European Commission, the Directive sets clean-vehicle quotas for government vehicle procurement programs. For heavy vehicles and buses, governments would be required to maintain fleets composed of at least 25% clean vehicles. The proposed Directive covers about 52,000 vehicles of over 3.5 tonnes in weight: 17,000 buses and 35,000 other heavy duty vehicles. As planned, annual government vehicle procurement for public transport services must include 25% vehicles classified as Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV). The Commission will examine whether, in a second stage, the quota obligation should be extended to include other vehicle categories.
